Roots and their links
RootLinks is an EU-funded project designed to empower Primary Producers in agriculture, forestry, and blue economy. Its overall objective is to connect and integrate the producers at the European level, reinforcing their key role in circular bio-based economy value chains.
The project is financed by the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) and seeks to provide Primary Producers with the necessary tools to support awareness raising, networking, cooperation and capacity building. RootLinks will foster new innovative business models that generate environmental and economic benefits, while strengthening links across the value chain.
To this end, the CBE JU established the Working Group on Primary Producers (WGPP), bringing together sector representatives to co-create an Action Plan. This plan aims to enhance the role of Primary Producers in future CBE JU-funded projects and beyond.
Primary Producers: challenges and future solutions
- Lack of communication and awareness about bio-based innovation opportunities: Primary Producers are not sufficiently informed or engaged in opportunities arising from cross-sector and value chain cooperation.
- Difficulty in actively participating in Research and Innovation initiatives: this lack of integration leads to a detachment from newly developed bio-based solutions and value chains.
- Structural barriers limit the active involvement of Primary Producers in the value chain: the small scale of some farms, the isolation of certain rural areas, and the ageing of the rural population are all issues that RootLinks aims to face.
Objectives
The objective of RootLinks is to support and facilitate the work of CBE JU’s WGPP to prepare and implement an Action Plan which will serve the following goals:
- Ensure that primary sectors benefit from the opportunities offered by circular and bio-based innovations and solutions supported by long-term sustainable and feasible business models.
- Enhance the role of Primary Producers and support their engagement along the circular bio-based systems and value chains.
